Day trip to Mysore

When: All days of the week
Starts: At 6:30 a.m. at your hotel
Ends: Around 8:30 pm at your hotel

What this tour is about:
This is a full day excursion to the historic city of Mysore. The Kingdom of Mysore, established by the Wodeyars (and ruled for a short while by Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan), was one of the wealthy kingdoms of the Deccan. The Mysore kings were enthusiastic patrons of art and culture, and their legacies continue to influence music and art even today. It usually takes between 3.5 to 4 hours to reach Mysore from Bangalore. Drive time may vary based on traffic and road conditions. We will break for lunch at the Royal Orchid Metropole in Mysore.

Places we will visit:
Mysore has lots to see and do; however in a day excursion, we will limit ourselves to some highlights of the city:

  • The Chamundi Temple at on a hilltop overlooking the city: The goddess Chamundeswari is the guardian deity of the city
  • The Amba Vilas Palace (also called Mysore Palace): This is the official residence of the Wodeyar royalty
  • The Devaraja Market and the Chikka Ghadiyara clock tower: This is a great way to see daily bazaar life in Mysore.
  • The District Collectorate Office, Mysore University, Oriental Institute and nearby college campuses: The British presence in Mysore is visible here; and you can also see student life in Mysore.

We will also drive around the city to get a sense of the city layout, its main buildings, residential and commercial areas, etc.
